When I was a child I used to pick beach glass on the sea shore…now this, plastic nurdles 😥
A while ago I read a long article about plastic pellets in the sea, and I was very impressed with it, thinking it was something so terribile and unstoppable. But I didn’t feel it so near, as when yesterday I walked on the sea shore, and start to notice all these little balls…what is this…I wondered, and than with a closer look I understood. They were the plastic pellets I read about on the newspaper…they were everywhere, so many you can’t count them, hidden well between little pebbles and shells. And the more you look, the more you see them. When I realized it, I suddently undertood the gravity of the problem. It wasn’t something far, something you read or see only in television. It was something near, present, terrible, and very real. All the sudden I realized how far we went with pollution, and how difficult is going to be to come back.
Plastic resin pellet pollution is a type of marine debris originating from plastic particles utilized in manufacturing large-scale plastics. These pre-production plastic pellets are melted down to form, and pellet loss is incurred during both the manufacturing and transport stages. Commonly referred to as nurdles, these plastics are released into the open environment, creating pollution in the oceans and on beaches.
Nurdles are a major contributor to marine debris. Researchers found them to be one of the most common beach contaminant.
Nurdles that escape from the plastic production process into waterways or oceans have become a significant source of ocean and beach plastic pollution. Plastic pellet pollution is mainly found in the sediments and beach areas. Nurdles have frequently been found in the digestive tracts of various marine creatures. (Wikipedia)
